The connection between Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and enhancing fertility may be scientifically elusive, but when patients visit us at our practice in Scarsdale, New York, they are undeniably pleased with the results. This ancient comprehensive medical system which includes acupuncture, herbs, exercise and nutrition optimizes the fertility potential for both men and women. Couples are increasingly turning to TCM as a way to augment their chances of conceiving and maintaining a healthy pregnancy.
We have been successfully treating infertility with TCM alone, as well as in conjunction with Western fertility treatments for over 10 years. More and more medical doctors are recommending acupuncture to their patients as a complementary therapy to modern fertility treatments. We live in a modern world, with many wonderful medical advances. We should not have to choose between the ancient and the modern, but rather, we should be free to take the best from both worlds. I encourage my patients to pursue all options that may lead them to optimal health, and I take the time to understand what those options might be for each individual.
It has been shown that TCM can balance hormone levels to regulate menstruation and ovulation, stimulate blood flow to the ovaries to produce a larger number of follicles and better quality eggs, and increase blood flow to the uterus, which thickens the endometrial lining for implantation. In the case of male infertility, TCM can also balance hormone levels and increase blood flow to the testicles, therefore promoting the production of healthy sperm.
My goal is to help people – even those with misgivings about needles – find comfort in embarking on a course of treatment with TCM. Typically, treatment is recommended 1-2x/week, for a minimum of three months. Within that period of time, patients often report such benefits as improved sleep, increased energy, vitality and concentration as well as an overall sense of wellbeing. The journey of helping couples achieve their goal of pregnancy is uniquely special. Anyone who doubts that Traditional Chinese Medicine can improve fertility should see the face of a patient when she brings in her beautiful newborn to say ‘Thank you’. It’s all the proof I need!
